ARTICLES A - AN - THE

Los artículos en ingles pueden ser mas fáciles de aprender que en español, puesto que solo hay 3 formas y no se debe tener en cuenta su genero.

Muchos comenten el error de pensar que A significa un y AN significa una, pero en verdad ambos artículos tienen el mismo significado.
Ejemplo: a banana (una banana), a pencil (un                       lapiz)
                an apple (una manzana), an eraser (un                   borrador)

como puedes ver en la imagen, la diferencia entre A y AN radica en su uso. A es utilizado cuando la palabra que sigue tiene un sonido de consonante y AN es utilizado cuando la palabra que sigue comienza con un sonido de vocal. 

Como puedes notar no se habla de consonantes y voacales, sino de sonidos de consonantes y vocales, puesto que existen palabras que a pesar de comenzar por consonante, utilizan el articulo AN, por ejemplo: AN HOUR, (en este caso la H es muda). 

Un dato importante es que no podemos utilizar A y AN con sustantivos plurales

Por otro lado, el articulo THE se utiliza cuando hablamos sobre algo que ya ha sido mencionado: I saw an old man with a dog, and the dog was barking (Vi a un hombre mayor y el perro estaba ladrando).Cuando hay una sola cosa de algo: The moon goes round the sun (La luna gira alrededor del sol).Cuando te refieres a algo concreto: He opened the door (Él abrió la puerta).Con lugares conocidos de la ciudad: I’ll go to the cinema (Iré al cine).Con superlativos: It’s the best restaurant in town (Es el mejor restaurante de la ciudad).

Ahora miremos unos ejemplos: 
  1. I am a good student. (Yo soy un buen estudiante)
  2. It is an old university . (Es una universidad antigua)
  3. He is a student. (Él es un estudiante)
  4. She is a young woman. (Ella es una mujer joven)
  5. He is an unusual man. (Él es un hombre inusual)
  6. He is a businessman. (Él es un hombre de negocios)
  7. He is a lawyer. (Él es un abogado)
  8. It is an ugly hotel. (Es un hotel desagradable)
  9. He is a clever boy. (Él es un chico muy listo)
  10. She is a good football player. (Ella es una buena jugadora de futbol)
  11. It is an empty bottle. (Es una botella vacía)
  12. He is a pilot. (Él es un piloto)
  13. It is an easy question. (Es una pregunta fácil)
  14. It is a sunny day. (Es un día soleado)
  15. It is an apple. (Es una manzana)
"The car I bought broke down." 
("El coche que compré se averió.")

"He has a son and a daughter. The daughter is a doctor."
("Tiene un hijo y una hija. La hija es médica.")

"The actors were really good."
("Los actores fueron muy buenos.") 

"I remember the day we first met."
("Recuerdo el primer día en que nos conocimos.") 

"The" se puede usar antes de sustantivos singulares y sustantivos plurales.

Ejemplos:

"The flower he gave her was very beautiful."
("La flor que le dio era muy hermoso.") 

"The flowers on the table are nice."
("Las flores en la mesa son lindas.")
